Our history

The Chelsea Courtyard is a Heritage building in the centre of Wynberg Village. This hidden courtyard is home to fashion, lifestyle and design shops and showrooms. All spaces offer sensory excitement around a beautifully designed garden.

Situated in the corner of Durban Rd and Wolfe Street, The Chelsea Courtyard can be accessed through a secret passageway which leads to the unique garden which gives the name to the building.

The oldest part of the building is a stone barn that was built in 1827 as a General store, serving the wagon route from Cape Town to Simon’s Town. The first floor was used to store fodder for the horses and oxen. It was once called the Teasy Building, named after the owner’s black standard poodle.

The distinctive front façade was added in 1898. Its huge teak windows showcase bright interiors, which have made the building a favourite for artists and creatives for decades.
